As the weather gets warmer, the farm gets busier! Last week, we were excited to be part of the Sustainable Food Center’s Meet the Farmer program at Gullett Elementary, Pease Elementary, and Magnolia Montessori schools last week. Students at these schools had the opportunity to quiz us about the farm, and they got to sample some of our fresh vegetables. Thank you for inviting Green Gate into your schools!
We also had a great time hosting 115 first-grade students from William Davis Elementary for a farm tour and lunch. The kids learned about all aspects of the farm system, from rabbits to radishes to recycling our food waste in the compost bins.
As always, we also enjoyed having Mrs. Hidalgo’s 5th grade class from the Austin Jewish Academy at the farm each week as part of their
experiential learning series. These students have been helping out in the fields, with the CSA shares, and with our sales and marketing department. They are quickly becoming Green Gate experts, and they’ll get a chance to demonstrate their farm knowledge by guiding 125 second-grade students on a farm tour later this week!
It’s a pleasure to have so many students on the farm, sharing their skills with us, learning invaluable lessons about our food system, and teaching their peers about farming. We are so glad to host field trips during the school year, but like many students we are also getting excited for summer! Camp season is fast approaching, and we can’t wait to see familiar faces and also to meet new friends at Farm Camp. We’ll be announcing this summer’s Farm Camp themes so stay tuned…..
Look forward to seeing you at the farm!
