New Farm Institute has several Internships available:

1. Marketing and Special Events

Responsibilities:

Assist Executive Director with all aspects of customer service, event planning, and marketing, including:

  • Develop campaigns and materials to raise awareness for NFI programming, fundraising
  • Assist with developing annual NFI marketing plan
  • Assist in updating NFI website, social media
  • Organize special events (attend as needed)
  • Write portions of NFI newsletter
  • Assist with annual fundraiser (“Hootenanny”) and other events

Commitment:  12-16 hours/week

Skills required:

  • Writing skills
  • Organized
  • Good sense of humor
  • Able to use creative marketing strategies
  • Able to juggle several projects with minimal supervision
  • Experience with Mac computer, Adobe Creative Suite (a plus not requirement)

2. Development Intern

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the founders of New Farm Institute on creating and implementing strategic development plan.
  • Research funding opportunities
  • Assist with grant writing
  • Help prepare for board meetings, develop advisory boards
  • Strengthen community partnerships by creating materials, giving presentations
  • Assist educators and administrative assistant in streamlining and organizing systems, other administrative tasks.

Commitment:  12-16 hours/week

Skills required:

  • Writing skills
  • Very organized
  • Self-directed, meets deadlines
  • Mac, Excel experience
  • Experience writing grant proposals
  • Experience researching funding opportunities
  • Flexible, good sense of humor
  • Able to juggle several projects with minimal supervision

3. Documentary Film Reporter

Responsibilities:

Document innovative service learning and farm-based education programming.

  • Film AJA’s group during weekly farm visits, service learning.
  • Work with Executive Director, teacher, and farm educators to develop film strategy and content
  • Interview necessary individuals for inclusion in documentary (i.e. principals, community members, etc.)
  • Create finished product shared through social media, local media, schools, farm website, etc.

Commitment:  12-16 hours/week

Skills required:

  • Access to videography equipment, including post-production equipment
  • Experience in videography, including video production and post-production
  • Experience with digital story telling, documentary creation, or journalism
  • Interest in documenting education, community service, social justice, sustainable agriculture, etc.
  • Good sense of humor
  • Organized and reliable
  • Available to film the majority of footage on Fridays between 10am and 2pm
  • Connections with UT Film school or professional organizations (preferred)

 4. Food Justice Advocate

Responsibilities:

Work to create a more sustainable and just food system for Austin and Bastrop.

  • Increase awareness of NFI’s community initiatives in our immediate neighborhood and beyond
  • Create partnerships with organizations working on food justices, identify project opportunities
  • Maintain NFI social media updates on its community service projects
  • Identify qualified candidates for farm scholarships
  • Manage Pavilion project, Monthly Farmer Forum, community outreach

Commitment:  12-16 hours

  • Able to juggle several projects with minimal supervision
  • Passion for sustainable food, social justice
  • Spanish speaker a plus

 5. Social Media and Farm Reporter

Responsibilities:

Assist Executive Director with all aspects of social media, public relations, and marketing, including:

  • Create editorial calendar for NFI
  • Write articles, take photos of farm events, service learning, and other farm news for weekly NFI blog
  • Create/maintain media list, pitch reporters
  • Organize and maintain photograph library
  • Increase farm photo library, including stock photos and event photos
  • Create and execute calendar of posts to Facebook, Twitter and other social media

Commitment:  12-16 hours

  • Organized
  • Good sense of humor
  • Able to develop creative marketing strategies
  • Able to juggle several projects with minimal supervision
  • Skilled photographer (with personal equipment)
  • Connections with School of Journalism or professional organizations (preferred)
  • Experience with Mac computers, Adobe Creative Suite (a plus not requirement)

 6. Farm-Based Education Intern

Responsibilities:

Assist with teaching students, ages 5-17, and teachers who visit our urban farm.

  • Assist farm educators in creating materials, activities, and curriculum for both guided and self-guided tours, service learning projects, field trips, and farm camp
  • Strengthen ties to local schools
  • Assist with day and weeklong farm camps
  • Assist with creation and scheduling of workshops, programs, activities

Commitment:  12-16 hours/week, including selected Saturdays mornings.

Skills required:

  • Experienced in education and child development
  • Experience with gardening or agriculture (preferred)
  • Self-directed and reliable
  • Organized
  • Outgoing and willing to work with diverse populations
  • Passionate about organic agriculture and nature-based learning
  • Work with minimal supervision
  • Spanish speaker a plus
